“I was more likely to become a teenage parent, a high school dropout, or end up incarcerated just like my father,” Aaliyah said.
Her father is currently serving a life sentence for capital murder, but Aaliyah was determined not to let that define her. Instead, she focused on proving the statistics wrong, aspiring to become a beacon of hope for others with similar backgrounds.

“I always blamed her for how my life was going or how it was at the moment. I never really saw what she was doing for my future,” she said.
But as Aaliyah grew, she began to appreciate her mother’s efforts and how those efforts had paved the way for her success.
Through hard work, persistence, and a clear vision for her future, Aaliyah earned a full-ride scholarship to Texas A&M University. This scholarship will cover her tuition for her entire undergraduate degree, allowing her to focus on her studies without financial worry.

Aaliyah’s excellence wasn’t limited to academics. She was also the captain of her high school swim team and was recognized as San Antonio’s Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year in 2019.
