Amgen Scholars Program (Summer Research)

The Amgen Scholars Program funds undergraduate summer research at 26 of the world’s leading universities, from Harvard, Stanford and Cambridge to ETH Zurich, the University of Tokyo and NUS. Scholars spend eight to ten weeks doing hands-on biotech and biomedical research with faculty mentors, fully supported with a stipend, housing and travel to a regional symposium.

Regional tracks cover the US, Europe, Asia, Canada and Australia, and the Asia program accepts students enrolled at universities across Asia, including Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Applications for Summer 2027 open November 1, 2026, with host deadlines around February 1, 2027.

• Undergraduate students who have not yet completed their bachelor's degree and will return to undergraduate study after the summer.
• Regional rules apply: the US program requires US citizens or permanent residents at US universities; Europe accepts students enrolled anywhere in the European Higher Education Area with no citizenship requirement; Asia accepts students enrolled at universities in Asia (Pakistan, India, Bangladesh and others included) with TOEFL 72 or IELTS 5.5 minimum; Canada and Australia cover their regions.
• At least one year of undergraduate study completed by the summer, with US hosts requiring sophomore standing and a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
• A genuine interest in pursuing a PhD (or MD-PhD) in science or biotechnology.
• Any major can apply, though most scholars come from science and engineering.
• No prior research experience is required, which makes it a real first-research opportunity.
• Applications go to one region only, based on where you are enrolled.

• Conduct hands-on laboratory research for eight to ten weeks under a faculty mentor at a leading host university such as Harvard, Stanford, Cambridge, ETH Zurich, Karolinska, LMU Munich, the University of Tokyo, Kyoto or NUS.
• Design and run experiments contributing to real projects in biotechnology, drug discovery and biomedical science.
• Attend seminars, journal clubs and professional development sessions built into each host's program.
• Present your research at your host's final symposium.
• Travel to the regional Amgen Scholars symposium (California for the Americas, Cambridge for Europe, Japan for Asia) to present alongside hundreds of scholars.
• Network with industry and academic scientists shaping the biotech field.

• Financial support at every host, typically covering a summer stipend, housing and meals, with symposium travel and lodging paid by the program.
• More than 5,800 alumni since 2007, backed by over USD 80 million from the Amgen Foundation, with funding confirmed through 2027.

• Confirm your region based on where you are enrolled, then shortlist host universities whose research areas fit your interests.
• Applications for Summer 2027 open November 1, 2026 for the US, Europe, Asia and Canada (Australia runs May to August).
• Apply separately to each chosen host through its own application page, since there is no single central form.
• Prepare transcripts, a letter of recommendation and a personal statement tailored to each host's research strengths.
• Submit before each host's deadline, which falls on or around February 1, 2027 in most regions.
• Decisions arrive between March and April, with programs running June to August 2027.
