IMF Fund Internship Program (Washington, D.C.)

The IMF Fund Internship Program brings around 50 doctoral-level economists and advanced law students to Washington, D.C. each summer for a paid 10 to 12 week research internship at the heart of the global financial system. Interns work one-on-one with IMF economists or counsel on live policy questions, often producing papers presented to staff or published by the Fund.

• Economics track: PhD students in macroeconomics or a related field who are within one to two years of completing the doctorate and will return to student status after the internship.
• Legal track: candidates within one to two years of completing an LLM, JD or equivalent advanced law degree.
• Below the age of 32 at the start of the internship.
• Studies concentrated in monetary and international economics, public finance, financial markets or related areas for the economics stream.
• Strong analytical and quantitative skills with an excellent command of written and oral English.
• All nationalities across the IMF's member countries are eligible.
• Occasional additional tracks (data, IT, communications and others) appear in some cycles with master's-level eligibility, per the individual posting.

• Work closely with an experienced IMF economist or counsel on a current research question or policy issue of importance to member countries.
• Conduct rigorous analysis and modeling, contributing to the Fund's surveillance, lending or research agendas.
• Prepare a research paper over the 10 to 12 weeks; many intern papers are presented to IMF staff and some are published.
• Participate in seminars, brown-bag talks and the intern cohort program at headquarters.
• Present your findings to the hosting department at the end of the internship.
• Build the track record that feeds the IMF's Economist Program recruitment pipeline.
