Darmasiswa Indonesian Scholarship Programme

Darmasiswa is the Indonesian government’s long-running scholarship for foreign students who want to study Bahasa Indonesia, or Indonesian arts, music, dance and crafts, at an Indonesian university. It is organised by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education together with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The programme began in 1974 as an ASEAN initiative, opened to the wider world in 1976, and now takes students from more than 111 countries across roughly 64 to 68 participating universities, including Universitas Indonesia, Universitas Gadjah Mada and Universitas Airlangga.

It is one of the most accessible international scholarships in existence, and that is the main reason to know about it. You need only a completed secondary education, a high school diploma or its equivalent. No prior degree is required, no prior knowledge of Indonesian is required, and the age range runs to around 32, with the upper limit extended in some cycles. Anyone from a country holding active diplomatic relations with Indonesia can apply, which is almost everywhere.

The honest counterpoint is that this is a one-year non-degree programme. You will not graduate with a bachelor’s, master’s or PhD, and it is important to be clear about that before applying rather than after. What you get instead is a full year of language and cultural immersion, a monthly living allowance of 4,700,000 rupiah, a book allowance and covered tuition at the host university. Given Indonesian living costs, that allowance goes a long way. International airfare is not covered, so flights are the one significant cost to budget for.

The application window is unusually short and easy to miss. In the most recent cycle it ran only from 15 May to 15 June, so watching the portal from early May is worth doing rather than checking occasionally. Choosing host universities deserves real thought, since each offers different subjects and sits in a different regional culture, and that choice shapes the entire year far more than it would on a conventional degree. The Indonesian Embassy or Consulate General in your country plays an active role in the process and can advise on country-specific requirements, so contacting them early is useful. If selected, you must click Accept in the portal and report to the Embassy to sign the acceptance contract by the stated deadline. Failing to do so is recorded as an automatic and formal withdrawal, with no route back.
