Harvard Academy Scholars Program (Postdoctoral Fellowship)

The Harvard Academy Scholars Program is a two-year, in-residence postdoctoral fellowship run by the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, part of the Weatherhead Center at Harvard University. It supports early-career social scientists whose work pairs disciplinary excellence with deep regional or linguistic expertise, and it is open to scholars of any nationality. Applications for the 2027-2028 cohort close on 18 September 2026.

The funding is unusually strong for a postdoctoral position. Scholars receive an annual stipend of 80,000 US dollars, additional research and travel funding, and health insurance, for two full years. Only five or six scholars are appointed each year, so this is a small and highly competitive cohort rather than a large programme, and the community that comes with it is correspondingly close. Senior Scholars, the faculty group that selects the cohort, stay actively involved as mentors throughout.

The defining eligibility condition catches many otherwise excellent applicants. Your research must focus on a country or region outside the United States and Canada, and must demonstrate command of the relevant language alongside social science rigour. The founders considered area studies expertise beyond North America to be the valuable addition to disciplinary training, and the selection process holds to that. There is also a hard timing rule: for the September 2026 deadline, a completed PhD must have been awarded on or after 1 August 2025. Advanced doctoral candidates may apply but must be able to produce registrar-issued conferral documentation by 30 June 2027.

Two practical points are worth planning around. The 1 August 2027 start date is fixed, with no postponements or deferrals allowed for any reason, so applicants who might need to delay should think carefully before committing. And anyone who already holds or has completed another Harvard postdoctoral fellowship is excluded outright. The application itself is demanding, requiring a 2,000-word research proposal, a writing sample of up to 50 pages, transcripts and three confidential recommendation letters, with the letters due after the main deadline. Shortlisted candidates are interviewed in person at Harvard in December, with travel and hotel expenses covered by the Academy. There is no application fee.

• Open to scholars of all countries and citizenships, with no nationality restriction whatsoever.
• You must have recently completed, or be nearing completion of, a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in the social sciences. DPhil and SJD qualify.
• For the 18 September 2026 deadline, a completed PhD must have been awarded on or after 1 August 2025, keeping you within two years of the 1 August 2027 start date.
• Doctoral candidates still finishing may apply, but must be able to submit degree conferral documentation from their university registrar by 30 June 2027.
• The start date of 1 August 2027 is fixed. No postponements or deferrals are permitted under any circumstances.
• Your research must combine excellence in a social science discipline with command of the language and deep knowledge of a country or region outside the United States or Canada. This regional focus is the defining condition.
• This is not a degree-granting programme. If you are not currently enrolled in or recently finished a social science doctorate, you are not eligible.
• Anyone who holds or has previously completed another postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard University is excluded.

• An annual stipend of USD 80,000, which is at the upper end of postdoctoral funding in the social sciences anywhere in the world.
• Additional research and travel funding each year on top of the stipend, plus health insurance coverage.
• Two full years in residence at Harvard with access to the university's research facilities, libraries and resources.
• Mentorship from the Harvard Academy Senior Scholars, a group of faculty who both select the cohort and actively support scholars through the fellowship.
• A deliberately small cohort. Typically only five or six scholars are appointed each year, so the community is close rather than nominal.
• Regular dinners, seminars and informal gatherings designed to push interdisciplinary exchange across regional and disciplinary lines.
• Shortlisted candidates are flown to Harvard for an in-person interview in December, with travel and hotel costs covered by the Academy.
• Academy Scholars overwhelmingly go on to faculty positions at research universities, which is the outcome the programme is built around.

• Online application through the Harvard Academy portal. All materials must be in English and in PDF format.
• Curriculum vitae including a complete list of academic publications.
• Research proposal of no more than 2,000 words.
• Scholarly writing sample of up to 50 pages, such as a dissertation chapter or a single-authored peer-reviewed article.
• Statement of research interests setting out your disciplinary and regional focus.
• Copy of your PhD programme transcript.
• Three confidential letters of recommendation, submitted directly by your referees through the portal, which have a later deadline than the application itself.
• Degree conferral documentation from your registrar if you are still completing the doctorate.

• Check the regional condition before anything else. Work focused on the United States or Canada does not qualify, however strong, because the programme exists to build area studies expertise elsewhere.
• Confirm your PhD completion date falls within the window. For this cycle that means on or after 1 August 2025, and the rule is applied strictly.
• Register your three referees in the portal early so the automated request links go out, since recommendation letters are due after the application deadline and depend on other people's schedules.
• Write the 2,000-word research proposal as the centrepiece. It has to show both disciplinary rigour and genuine regional command, and the selection committee is made up of senior faculty who will judge both.
• Choose the writing sample for quality over recency, and keep it within the 50-page limit.
• Submit before 11:59 PM EDT on 18 September 2026. There is no application fee.
• Shortlisted candidates interview in person at Harvard in December, with travel and accommodation paid.
• Plan around the fixed 1 August 2027 start, because deferral is not available if your circumstances change.
