Heinrich Böll Foundation Scholarship (Fall 2026)
About this scholarship
The Heinrich Böll Foundation, affiliated with the German Green Party, awards approximately 1,500 scholarships annually to students and doctoral candidates from all nationalities who share the foundation’s values of ecology, sustainability, democracy, and human rights. Named after the Nobel Prize-winning German writer, this is one of Germany’s most prestigious political foundation scholarships. Available for Master’s and PhD programs at any state or state-recognized university in Germany. The scholarship covers the standard study period with the option to apply for a one-semester renewal.
Eligibility
- Open to international students of all nationalities
- Must be enrolled in or accepted to a Master's or PhD program at a German university
- International students who completed their first degree abroad are especially encouraged to apply — priority given to applicants from DAC (developing) countries who have not yet taken up residence in Germany
- Must demonstrate excellent academic record
- Must show social and political engagement aligned with green values (ecology, sustainability, democracy, human rights)
- Proficiency in German at B2 level or DSH-1 minimum is mandatory for international applicants
