Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP) 2027
About this scholarship
The JJ/WBGSP, funded by the Government of Japan, enables mid-career professionals from developing countries to pursue graduate degrees in development-related fields at selected universities worldwide. Since 1987, more than 7,000 professionals from 160 countries have benefited. The program supports Master’s and doctoral study in areas such as economic policy, infrastructure, human development, public administration, and tax policy. Preferred universities include programs in the US, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Oceania.
Eligibility
Must be a national of a World Bank member developing country (see eligible countries list). Must not hold citizenship of a developed country. At least 3 years of recent development-related work experience after completing a Bachelor's degree. Currently employed in a development-related capacity. Must be under 45 years of age. Must hold a Bachelor's degree earned at least 3 years before the application deadline. Must not be an Executive Director, alternate, staff, or consultant of the World Bank Group.

- Employer certification of employment and commitment to development work
- Academic transcripts and degree certificates
- Three recommendation letters (at least one from current employer)
- CV / Resume highlighting development experience
- Statement of purpose describing career plans and development goals
- Admission letter from a preferred program
- Passport copy
How to Apply
- Be a citizen of an eligible World Bank member developing country (no dual citizenship with a developed country) with at least 3 years of recent development-related work experience
- First gain unconditional admission to one of the JJ/WBGSP participating master's programmes and be shortlisted by that university
- The scholarship application link is then sent to eligible shortlisted candidates to apply online
- Scholars commit to return home to contribute to development
