About this scholarship
The MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Research Student Scholarship allows international students to study as research students at Japanese universities with full funding. The University Recommendation track means you apply directly to a Japanese university rather than through a Japanese embassy. This track often has less competition than the Embassy Recommendation track. Approximately 4,100 scholarships are awarded across both tracks annually.
Eligibility
Must be a citizen of a country that has diplomatic relations with Japan. Age requirement varies by program type (generally under 35). Must hold or be completing a degree relevant to the intended field of study. Must be willing to learn Japanese (for programs taught in Japanese). Must be in good physical and mental health. Must be able to arrive in Japan by the designated date.

- Monthly stipend of ¥143,000-¥145,000 (approximately $960-$975)

- Japanese language preparatory courses (6 months or 1 year if needed)

How to Apply
- University Recommendation route: apply through a Japanese university that has a recommendation quota (often via an exchange agreement with your institution)
- The university screens applicants and recommends successful candidates to MEXT, which makes the final decision
- Submit the required documents to the university by its deadline; research students usually arrive in Japan in September/October or April
