About this scholarship
The Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho/MEXT) Scholarship is one of the world’s most comprehensive fully-funded study-abroad programmes. Administered by Japanese embassies, it covers undergraduate, master’s, PhD and research student categories at any Japanese university. Recipients gain access to Japan’s top research institutions and a generous monthly stipend.
Eligibility
- Citizen of a country with diplomatic relations with Japan
- Undergraduate: typically under 25 years old at application
- Master's/PhD (Research student): under 35 years old at application
- Meet academic requirements (varies by category)
- Willing to learn Japanese
- Not currently receiving another Japanese government scholarship
Benefits & Coverage
- Full tuition fees at any Japanese university
- Monthly stipend: approximately ¥117,000 for undergraduates, ¥144,000 for master's, ¥145,000-¥147,000 for PhD
- Round-trip economy airfare between home country and Japan
- 6 months of intensive Japanese language preparatory training (if needed)
- No bond or service requirement after graduation
How to Apply
- Apply before arriving in Japan via either Embassy Recommendation (through the Japanese Embassy/Consulate in your home country, which runs the first screening) or University Recommendation (via a Japanese university)
- Embassy-route candidates who pass the first screening contact a prospective Japanese university for a Letter of Provisional/Acceptance
- Submit the application forms, a health certificate, transcripts, and a field-of-study/research plan; categories cover undergraduate, research (graduate), and other students
