About this scholarship

The Mitacs Globalink Research Internship brings international undergraduates to Canada for a funded twelve-week research placement supervised by faculty at more than seventy Canadian academic institutions. It is run by Mitacs in partnership with an organisation in each participating country, and it is open to students from a defined partner list that includes Pakistan, India, China, Brazil, Mexico, Jordan, Tunisia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and others.

For Pakistani applicants the terms are relatively generous. There is no citizenship requirement, all Pakistani universities on the published eligibility list qualify, every discipline is open, no language proficiency test is demanded by Mitacs, and the threshold is a cumulative average of eighty percent. Students enrolled in master’s-only programmes are not eligible, but combined undergraduate and master’s programmes are. You need to have completed at least two years of undergraduate study, or be in your second year, and to have one to three semesters remaining in your programme in the autumn following the internship. Timing your application against your own graduation date is worth doing carefully, since this condition rules out final-semester students.

The funding covers return airfare, transport from the airport to your accommodation, a housing stipend, enrolment fees, food and incidentals, and emergency health insurance for the internship period. Amounts vary by country of origin and host institution. Beyond the money, interns are invited to professional development courses, industry events and government events, and are supported by student mentors on campus, which makes a first trip abroad far less daunting than it might otherwise be. Mitacs claims no ownership of intellectual property developed during funded projects, so research output remains a matter between you and your host.

Two process details cause most avoidable failures. First, the reference letter must come from a professor who has supervised or co-supervised your work, on institutional letterhead and signed, and must follow the official Mitacs guidelines. Letters that do not meet those requirements make the entire application ineligible, so give your referee the guidance document rather than a verbal request. Second, there is no submit button. Applications are submitted automatically at the deadline and your status must already read Complete by then, which means finishing early is a structural requirement rather than good advice. Applicants must also select a minimum of three and a maximum of ten projects, drawn from at least three different Canadian provinces. Matching runs from September through December, with internships confirmed by email between mid-December and mid-February, and unsuccessful applicants may reapply the following year.

Eligibility

  • Open to undergraduates enrolled at eligible institutions in a defined partner list that includes Pakistan, India, China, Brazil, Mexico, Jordan, Tunisia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom and others.
  • For Pakistan specifically, all Pakistani universities on the published eligibility list qualify, there is no citizenship requirement, all disciplines are open, and the minimum CGPA is 80 percent.
  • You must be at least 18 at the time of application and enrolled full time in an undergraduate or combined undergraduate and master's programme. Master's-only students are not eligible.
  • You need to have completed at least two years of undergraduate study, or be in the second year of your current programme.
  • You must have one to three semesters remaining in your programme as of the autumn following the internship, so timing your application against your graduation date matters.
  • You must apply to a minimum of three and a maximum of ten projects, chosen from at least three different Canadian provinces.
  • You must be available for 12 consecutive weeks starting between 1 May and 31 July, with no flexibility on those start dates.
  • Previous Globalink Research Internship award holders cannot apply again.

Benefits & Coverage

  • A fully funded 12-week research placement supervised by faculty at one of more than 70 Canadian academic institutions.
  • Funding covers return airfare, airport transfer, a housing stipend, enrolment fees, food and incidentals, and emergency health insurance for the internship period.
  • Hands-on research experience in your own discipline, working alongside graduate students and research associates rather than observing from the sidelines.
  • Access to professional development courses, industry events and government events run by Mitacs during your stay.
  • On-campus student mentors, which makes a first international trip considerably less daunting.
  • A strong signal for later graduate applications to Canada, since many interns return for master's or PhD study with a supervisor who already knows their work.
  • Mitacs claims no ownership of intellectual property developed during funded projects, so your research output remains negotiable between you and the host.

Required Documents

  • Application submitted through the Globalink Student Platform, where you create a single personal account. Do not create multiple profiles.
  • At least one reference letter in English or French from a professor who has supervised or co-supervised your work, on institutional letterhead and signed.
  • Official academic transcripts in English or French, or the original plus a translated and notarised version.
  • Curriculum vitae, either your own or the Mitacs template.
  • A statement of research interests, skills and achievements, plus your reasons for pursuing research in Canada.
  • A passport valid until at least January of the year after the internship, though you may apply before obtaining one.
  • Language proficiency test results where your country's partner organisation requires them. Mitacs itself does not require them from every country.

How to Apply

  • Register your interest on the Mitacs site now so you are notified the moment the student call opens, since the window is only about six weeks.
  • Prepare the reference letter early and give your professor the official Mitacs guidelines, because letters that do not follow the instructions make the whole application ineligible.
  • Confirm your home institution appears on the eligible institutions list for your country, and email the Mitacs helpdesk if it is missing rather than assuming you are excluded.
  • Search the online project database and shortlist projects carefully, remembering the rule of at least three projects across at least three provinces.
  • There is no submit button. Applications are submitted automatically at the deadline, and your status must read Complete by then, so finish early.
  • Matching runs from September through December, and Mitacs confirms internships by email between mid-December and mid-February.
  • Applicants who are not selected can reapply the following year provided they still meet the eligibility conditions.
