About this scholarship

New Zealand Manaaki Scholarships (formerly NZAS/NZDS) are funded by the New Zealand Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT). They support citizens of eligible developing countries in the Pacific, Asia, Africa, and Latin America to study for undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications at New Zealand universities and institutes of technology. The program aims to contribute to the sustainable development of partner countries. New Zealand offers a world-class education system, stunning natural environment, and welcoming multicultural society.

Eligibility

  • Must be a citizen of an eligible partner country (Pacific Islands, Southeast Asia, South Asia, parts of Africa, and Latin America — check full list)
  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Must meet the academic entry requirements of the New Zealand institution
  • Must meet English language requirements (typically IELTS 6.0+ for undergraduate, 6.5+ for postgraduate)
  • Must return to home country after completing studies and not apply for residence in New Zealand
  • Must not be a citizen or permanent resident of New Zealand or Australia
  • Must demonstrate how the proposed study relates to your country's development needs

Required Documents

Completed application form (country-specific), Academic transcripts from all prior institutions, Degree certificates, English language proficiency test results, Statement of purpose explaining how the study relates to development needs, Two reference letters (academic and/or professional), CV/Resume, Medical and dental certificates, Police clearance certificate, Valid passport copy, Employer support letter (if currently employed)

How to Apply

  • Be a citizen of an eligible developing country in the Pacific or Asia, aged 18+ at the start, who has lived in your home country for the two years before applying and commits to returning home for at least two years after study to contribute to its development
  • Study full-time in a priority field at an eligible New Zealand institution (or a Pacific university for some Pacific scholars)
  • Register and apply online through the Manaaki New Zealand Scholarship system during your country's application window (around March) with your documents and a statement of your development-impact plans
