About this scholarship
Joint fellowship between South Africa’s National Research Foundation and TWAS for PhD candidates from developing countries to pursue doctoral research at South African universities.
Eligibility
Citizens of developing countries (excluding South Africa). Under 35. Master's degree in natural sciences, engineering, or related fields. Accepted by a South African university.

Annual stipend of ZAR 120,000, return economy airfare, research support costs

How to Apply
- Be a citizen or permanent resident of a developing country other than South Africa, not living/studying/working in South Africa or a developed country, holding an MSc in the natural sciences with at least 65% at master's level, and up to about 32 years of age
- Register full-time at a South African public university or research institution in an eligible science, engineering, and technology field, with a host-institution letter and a SAQA evaluation of your foreign qualifications
- Apply via the NRF online submission system; grant holders commit to returning to their home country after completing the PhD
