University of Luxembourg PhD Grant (FNR AFR)

The AFR (Aides a la Formation-Recherche) PhD Grant is offered by the University of Luxembourg together with the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR) to support doctoral researchers, with a master’s funding option also available. It is a salaried PhD scheme open to candidates of any nationality, funding research at Luxembourg host institutions.

The AFR PhD provides an employment contract with a salary contribution of around 44,322 euros a year (the employer may top up to a maximum gross of around 62,461), plus a 6,000-euro training and mobility allowance and a one-off travel lump sum, for up to four years. A separate master’s option offers low enrolment fees (around 200 euros per semester for most programmes) plus the Guillaume Dupaix International Master’s Scholarship of 11,000 euros a year for up to two years.

Eligibility for the AFR Incoming PhD is open to candidates of any nationality who secure a doctoral position at an eligible Luxembourg host institution and spend more than 50 percent of the time in Luxembourg; the application is submitted jointly by the candidate and the host institution. You identify a doctoral position and supervisor at a Luxembourg host (for example the University of Luxembourg) and submit the AFR application jointly with the host by the annual deadline through the FNR system. For doctoral researchers aiming at Luxembourg, the AFR grant is a well-paid, employment-based route.
