University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF)

The University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowship (UMGF) is offered by the University of Manitoba’s Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to support research-based master’s and doctoral students, including international students. It is a merit-based living stipend that frees students to focus on thesis research within a strong research community.

The award provides an annual stipend of 20,000 Canadian dollars for master’s students (for up to two years, up to 40,000 total) or 25,000 for doctoral students (for up to four years, up to 100,000 total), with a maximum combined UMGF support of five years. It is renewed on satisfactory academic standing and may be topped up by departmental awards or Tri-Agency stipends.

Eligibility is open to students of all nationalities admitted to a full-time research-based master’s or PhD programme at Manitoba, with a minimum admission GPA of 3.0 (some departments require higher) and no grade below C+; the programme must be eligible for Canadian Tri-Agency funding (MBA, MFin, and MSCM are not eligible), and pre-master’s and occasional students are not eligible. You apply for admission to a research programme, contact your department about its UMGF process and internal deadline, and the department nominates its selected students to the Faculty. For research graduate students aiming at Canada, the UMGF is a generous stipend.
