Details of the 2024 University of Cape Town Scholarship

Funded by DANIDA (2024-2028), the ACC has secured scholarships as part of the CLAIMS to Energy Citizenship project. This project focuses on energy transitions in South Africa and offers:

  • Two PhD Positions
  • Two Master Scholarships

Project Focus Areas

  1. WP1: Everyday practices and activism related to energy access, led by Prof. Karen Waltorp (University of Copenhagen).
  2. WP2: Sub-national state processes in transitioning energy systems, led by Dr. Liza Cirolia (ACC).
  3. WP3: Synthesizing insights from WP1 and WP2 to develop a multi-scalar view of infrastructural citizenship.

Eligibility Requirements to study in Africa

Applicants must:

  • Hold a Master’s degree in anthropology, geography, sociology, urban studies, or related fields.
  • Have field-based ethnographic research experience in underserviced urban residential areas and be willing to conduct research in Khayelitsha.
  • Participate in project activities, including research, workshops, and events.
  • Be able to travel to Europe for exchanges and training.

  • Skills in visual or multimodal anthropology (e.g., documentary, podcast, arts practice).
  • Experience with energy projects in South Africa.
  • Fluency in isiXhosa.

University of Cape Town Scholarship Benefits

  • Scholarship Value: ZAR 315,000 per year, renewable for three years based on annual progress.
  • Additional Funding: Available for fieldwork and travel costs.

  2. CV (Max 2 pages): Including contact details of at least two academic referees.
  3. Academic Certificates and Transcripts.
