Visa Information
- Non-EU students staying over 90 days need a residence permit for study; if your nationality needs a visa, first get a long-stay (D) visa with your admission letter.
- Show proof that you can pay tuition and living costs; the embassy or migration office will tell you the amount it currently expects.
- Apply for the permit soon after arrival, usually with your university's help, and check the work conditions it allows before taking a job.
- Albania is outside the EU and Schengen area, so an Albanian permit does not give the right to live or study in EU countries.
Study requirements
- A completed secondary school certificate for bachelor's, or a relevant bachelor's degree for master's
- English-taught programs: IELTS, TOEFL or another test the university accepts; Albanian-taught programs: Albanian proficiency or a preparatory language year
- Foreign school certificates and degrees usually need recognition by the national authority
- Official transcripts and certificates, with certified translations if they are not in English or Albanian
- Apply through the university's online application or international office
- For the visa or residence permit: a valid passport, the admission letter, proof of funds, health insurance and accommodation details
Student life
Tirana is the main student city, a compact and inexpensive capital with mountains behind it and the Adriatic and Ionian coasts within easy reach by bus. Shkodër and Durrës also have universities. Living costs are among the lowest in Europe, summers are hot and winters mild. The higher education sector is small and English-taught options are limited, so confirm recognition of the degree with your home authority before enrolling.
