Visa Information

  • Students from outside Mercosur apply to the National Migration Directorate (DNM) for temporary residence as a student, with a consular visa first if their nationality needs one
  • You need an enrolment certificate from a recognised institution, police certificates and proof that you can support yourself; check the current documents and fees with the DNM
  • Nationals of Mercosur and associated countries can use the simpler Mercosur residence route instead
  • Since the 2025 migration decree (DNU 366/2025), public hospitals may charge foreigners without permanent residency, so take health insurance for your stay

Study requirements

  • A completed secondary school certificate for bachelor's, a relevant bachelor's degree for master's, and usually a master's for a PhD
  • Spanish-taught programs (nearly all): Spanish proficiency such as DELE, SIELE or Argentina's CELU; the few English-taught programs ask for IELTS or TOEFL
  • Official transcripts and certificates, with certified translations if they are not in English or Spanish
  • Foreign school certificates need an apostille and recognition (convalidación) by the Ministry of Education before you can enrol in a degree
  • Most public universities have no entrance exam but start with an entry course; at the University of Buenos Aires this is the common first cycle (CBC)
  • Apply through the university's admission office, and check whether it now charges foreign students without permanent residency
  • For residence: passport, enrolment certificate, police certificates, proof of funds and health insurance

Student life

Buenos Aires, Córdoba, La Plata, Rosario and Mendoza are the main student cities, and the University of Buenos Aires alone teaches several hundred thousand students. Public universities have long been free, but since 2025 each may charge foreigners without permanent residency, so confirm fees before you apply. Inflation has fallen since 2024, yet prices in dollar terms have risen, so budget carefully. Buses and the Buenos Aires subway are cheap, and long-distance buses connect the whole country.
