- Bring proof of enrolment, proof of funds or a scholarship, and certified copies of your diplomas
Study requirements
- A baccalauréat or equivalent secondary school certificate for bachelor's, a relevant bachelor's degree for master's, and usually a master's for a PhD
- French-taught programs (most): French proficiency, for example DELF, DALF or TCF; the few English-taught programs ask for IELTS or TOEFL
- Official transcripts and certificates, with certified translations if they are not in English or French
- Apply through the university's admission office; public universities have limited places and many programs select on your file
- For master's and PhD: a CV, statement of purpose and academic references; PhD applicants usually also need a research proposal and an agreed supervisor
- For the residence card: passport, enrolment certificate and proof of funds or a scholarship
Student life
Dakar is the main student city, home to Cheikh Anta Diop University, with Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis the other large public campus. Living costs are low, though housing in central Dakar is expensive. Teaching is mainly in French and Wolof is spoken everywhere, so learning a little helps. Public universities are crowded, and strikes and campus closures have disrupted calendars at times, so confirm dates with your faculty.
