The United Nation Economic Fellowship is designed to provide practical, on-the-job experience for young professionals in their early and middle career stages within the academy, public sector, or international development.

The Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) is the UN’s regional arm in Africa, focusing on the continent’s economic and social development. ECA’s unique position allows it to contribute significantly to the development efforts of African member states, supporting regional priorities, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Agenda 2030, and Agenda 2063 of the African Union.

United Nation Economic Fellowship Eligibility Requirements

To qualify for the United Nations Fellowship Program 2024, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Age: 35 years old or younger at the time of application.
  • Nationality: Must be a national of a member state of the Economic Commission for Africa.
  • Education: Must have graduated before July 1, 2024, with a master’s degree, doctorate, or equivalent qualification.
  • Interest: Should have a thematic interest in one or more identified areas.
  • Project Work: The candidate will work on a predefined project within the mentoring Division, Sub-Regional Office, or ECA Centers.
  • Meeting Participation: Must participate in national, regional, or international meetings as assigned.
  • Research Presentation: At the end of the assignment, must submit and present a peer-reviewed research paper.
  • Alumni Engagement: Will join an alumni association of ECA Fellows and become part of the international development community of practice.

United Nation Economic Fellowship Benefits

Selected Fellows will receive:

  • A one-off settling-in grant of USD 3,000 (for fellows recruited from outside the duty station).
  • A monthly stipend of USD 3,000 for the duration of the fellowship.
  • The fellowship lasts for 6 months, with a possible extension of another 6 months.
