Why study here

Aston University is a public university in central Birmingham, founded in 1895 as a municipal technical school. It is known for its business school, engineering, pharmacy and optometry, and many students take a placement year in industry. Its compact campus is a short walk from the city's main shopping and transport areas. Birmingham is England's second-largest city and has lower living costs than London.

Admission requirements

  • A levels, the International Baccalaureate or an equivalent for bachelor's (some school certificates need a foundation year), and a relevant bachelor's degree for master's
  • IELTS Academic or another English test the university accepts, unless you are exempt by nationality or a previous English-taught degree
  • Official transcripts and certificates, with certified translations if they are not in English
  • Some courses set admissions tests or interviews, including medicine, law and most courses at Oxford and Cambridge
  • For master's and PhD: a CV, statement of purpose and academic references; PhD applicants usually also need a research proposal and an agreed supervisor
  • Proof that you can pay tuition and living costs, as UK Visas and Immigration requires for the Student visa

How to apply

  • Choose your program and check its entry requirements, language of instruction and deadline on the university website
  • Undergraduates apply through UCAS (Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses have an earlier October deadline); postgraduates apply directly through the university's portal
  • Upload transcripts, language scores, your passport and, for postgraduate programs, CV, statement of purpose and references
  • Pay the application fee if the university charges one, and apply before the program deadline
  • Accept an unconditional offer to receive your CAS, then apply for a UK Student visa and pay the immigration health surcharge; some science and engineering postgraduates also need ATAS clearance
