Why study here

The University of St. Gallen (HSG) is a public university in eastern Switzerland, founded in 1898 as a commercial academy, that specializes in business, economics, law and international affairs. Bachelor's students start with a common assessment year, and many master's programs, such as strategy and international management, are taught in English. It is a member of the CEMS alliance of business schools, and the number of places for foreign students is limited by law. St. Gallen is a small city near Lake Constance with high Swiss living costs.

Admission requirements

  • A completed secondary school certificate for bachelor's, a relevant bachelor's degree for master's, and usually a master's for a PhD
  • English-taught programs: IELTS, TOEFL or another test the university accepts; German-taught programs: German, usually at C1
  • Official transcripts and certificates, with certified translations if they are not in English or German
  • Some foreign school certificates are not enough for bachelor's admission; those applicants may need an entrance examination
  • Places for foreign bachelor's applicants are limited by law, and they are admitted through the HSG's own selection procedure.
  • For master's and PhD: a CV, statement of purpose and academic references; PhD applicants usually also need a research proposal and an agreed supervisor
  • A valid passport and proof that you can pay tuition and living costs for the student visa

How to apply

  • Choose your program and check its entry requirements, language of instruction and deadline on the university website
  • Apply directly through the university's online application portal
  • Upload transcripts, language scores, your passport and, for postgraduate programs, CV, statement of purpose and references
  • Pay the application fee if the university charges one, and apply before the program deadline
  • Apply for a Swiss national (D) visa through the Swiss embassy; the cantonal migration office then issues your student residence permit
