Why study here

University of Stirling is a public university in central Scotland, founded in 1967, with a campus set around a loch in the grounds of Airthrey Castle. It is known for aquaculture through its Institute of Aquaculture, sport, media and communication, and social sciences such as social work and criminology. Stirling is Scotland's designated university for sporting excellence, with national tennis and swimming centres on campus. The city is small, with lower living costs than Edinburgh or Glasgow.

Admission requirements

  • A levels, the International Baccalaureate or an equivalent for bachelor's (some school certificates need a foundation year), and a relevant bachelor's degree for master's
  • IELTS Academic or another English test the university accepts, unless you are exempt by nationality or a previous English-taught degree
  • Official transcripts and certificates, with certified translations if they are not in English
  • Some courses set admissions tests or interviews, including medicine, law and most courses at Oxford and Cambridge
  • For master's and PhD: a CV, statement of purpose and academic references; PhD applicants usually also need a research proposal and an agreed supervisor
  • Proof that you can pay tuition and living costs, as UK Visas and Immigration requires for the Student visa

How to apply

  • Choose your program and check its entry requirements, language of instruction and deadline on the university website
  • Undergraduates apply through UCAS (Oxford, Cambridge and most medicine courses have an earlier October deadline); postgraduates apply directly through the university's portal
  • Upload transcripts, language scores, your passport and, for postgraduate programs, CV, statement of purpose and references
  • Pay the application fee if the university charges one, and apply before the program deadline
  • Accept an unconditional offer to receive your CAS, then apply for a UK Student visa and pay the immigration health surcharge; some science and engineering postgraduates also need ATAS clearance
