About the Tongarewa Scholarship
The Tongarewa Scholarship celebrates academic excellence and is awarded based on the merit of the applicant’s academic achievements. This partial fee-based scholarship is credited towards the tuition fees for one year of study. Additionally, scholarship recipients are guaranteed an offer of a place in one of Victoria University of Wellington’s Halls of Residence, subject to the timely submission of an accommodation application.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be:
- International students paying full international fees
- Entering their first year of an undergraduate degree or a postgraduate degree program
Please note, students who have completed their secondary education at a New Zealand school, completed the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) or Foundation Studies Programme, are Study Abroad or Twinning students from partner universities, or are in their second year of study in the same degree program at Victoria University of Wellington, are not eligible.
Victoria University of Wellington Tongarewa Scholarship Benefits
Recipients of the Tongarewa Scholarship will receive a scholarship amount of $5,000 or $10,000, which will be applied to their tuition fees after the final withdrawal date of the trimester’s courses.
Application Requirements
To apply, prepare to submit:
- A personal statement (up to 500 words) detailing your reasons for choosing Victoria University of Wellington, your academic ambitions, and why you deserve the scholarship. Include any leadership roles and community involvement.
- Full academic transcripts and relevant documents.
- An offer of place from Victoria University of Wellington (conditional or unconditional).
