    Google Summer of Code Overview

Are you a student interested in software development solutions?

Google Summer of Code is a global, online program focused on bringing new contributors into open-source software development.

GSoC Contributors work with an open-source organization on a 12+ week programming project under the guidance of mentors.

Google Summer of Code Main Roles

    1. Program Administrators: Employees of Google’s Open-Source Programs Office, responsible for running GSoC. They select participating projects, administer the program, maintain the web application, and ensure participants are paid. They offer advice based on their experience but don’t select proposals.
    2. Organization Administrators (Org Admins): Serve as coordinators for their open source projects within GSoC. They handle the application process, ensure mentor evaluations are completed, and act as a liaison with Google. They decide on project acceptance, mentor assignments, and handle any issues, including communication breakdowns between mentors and contributors.
    3. Mentors: Community volunteers guiding GSoC contributors, providing documentation, code reviews, and general advice to help them integrate into the project community. While some organizations may assign multiple mentors to a contributor, others contribute guidance informally.
    4. GSoC Contributors: Individuals new to open source eager to learn and contribute. They must be at least 18 years old and come from various backgrounds, including students, recent graduates, career switchers, etc. Contributors submit project proposals to participating organizations, which then select the proposals they want to fund. Contributors often progress to become vital community members, mentors, or org admins.
