The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at the University of Cape Town (UCT) provides comprehensive, fully funded scholarships to talented young people from Africa who face financial barriers to education. UCT is Africa’s top-ranked university, known for excellence in research, teaching, and social impact. The program goes beyond financial support — it provides holistic academic, leadership, and career development to prepare scholars to become transformative leaders on the African continent.

Eligibility

  • Must be a citizen of an African country
  • Must be under 35 years old at the time of application
  • Must demonstrate strong academic ability and potential
  • Must come from a socio-economically disadvantaged background with financial need
  • Must demonstrate leadership potential and commitment to giving back to their community
  • Must have been admitted to or be applying for an eligible undergraduate or postgraduate program at UCT
  • Must commit to working in Africa for at least 2 years after graduation

Required Documents

Completed UCT admission application, Completed Mastercard Foundation scholarship application form, Academic transcripts and certificates, National ID or passport copy, Proof of financial need (income documentation or affidavit), Personal statement on leadership experience and future goals, Two recommendation letters (one academic, one community/professional), Evidence of community engagement or leadership activities, Motivational essay on how you plan to contribute to Africa's transformation, Medical certificate

How to Apply

  • Be an academically talented young African from an economically disadvantaged background with leadership potential, applying as a first-time undergraduate or postgraduate (honours/master's) student
  • First apply for academic admission to UCT to obtain your UCT application code
  • Then complete the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program application online via the UCT MCF portal (passing the eligibility quiz) during the annual call (around July to September); scholars commit to returning to their home countries
