About this scholarship
The Aga Khan Foundation International Scholarship Programme assists outstanding students from select developing countries who have no other means of financing their postgraduate studies. Scholarships are awarded on a 50% grant and 50% loan basis, but the loan component can be converted to a grant based on financial need assessment. The Foundation prioritizes studies that lead to employment in the applicant’s home country. The scholarship can be used at renowned universities worldwide. Fields of study must be relevant to the development needs of the applicant’s home country.
Eligibility
- Must be a citizen of one of the eligible countries (includes Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Syria, Egypt, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Madagascar, and others)
- Must have no other means of financing postgraduate education
- Must have gained admission to a reputable university for a postgraduate program
- Must be committed to returning to home country after completing studies
- Must demonstrate outstanding academic record
- Should be applying for a program relevant to the development needs of the home country
- Priority given to applicants under 30 years old
Benefits & Coverage
- Tuition fees covered (amount varies based on institution and need assessment)
- Living expenses support
- Travel costs to and from place of study
- 50% of the award is a grant (no repayment)
- Remaining 50% is an interest-free loan (repayable after employment
- With the possibility of conversion to full grant based on financial circumstances)
- Academic advising and career counseling from the AKF network

Completed AKF scholarship application form, Detailed financial needs assessment documentation, Academic transcripts from all prior institutions, Degree certificates, Proof of admission to the postgraduate program, Personal essay on development goals and how the program relates to home country needs, Two recommendation letters (academic and professional), CV/Resume, Copies of published work or research (if applicable), Passport copy, Evidence of having explored and exhausted other funding options
How to Apply
- Secure admission to a Master's or PhD programme first
- Contact the local Aga Khan Foundation office in your country of residence
- Obtain and complete the application form from that local office
- Submit transcripts, admission proof, references, and financial documents by the local deadline
