About this scholarship

The Catholic Academic Exchange Service (KAAD) is one of the largest German scholarship organizations. It supports academically talented students from Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe who wish to pursue Master’s or PhD studies at German universities. KAAD scholars are expected to contribute to the development of their home countries after completing their studies. The organization also provides pastoral care and an active alumni network.

Eligibility

Must be from a developing or emerging country in Asia, Africa, Latin America, the Middle East, or Eastern Europe. Must be Catholic or from another Christian denomination (or show openness to Christian values). Must already be admitted to or enrolled in a Master's or PhD program at a German university. Must intend to return to the home country after completing studies. Good academic record required. At least 2 years of professional experience preferred.

How to Apply

  • Be a national and current resident of a developing or emerging country in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, or Latin America, holding a university degree with professional experience and planning postgraduate study or research in Germany
  • You should be Catholic (or another Christian denomination; others may apply if recommended by Catholic partners) and committed to returning home
  • Apply via the KAAD online application and through the partner committee in your home country (which sets its own deadline); shortlisted candidates are interviewed
