Why study here

Lulea University of Technology is a public technical university in northern Sweden, founded in 1971, with its main campus in Lulea and further campuses including Kiruna and Skellefteå. It is known for mining and minerals engineering, metallurgy and materials, and space science and engineering, which it teaches partly in Kiruna. Many master's programs are taught in English. Students from outside the EU and EEA pay tuition fees, and the region has long, cold winters and lower living costs than Stockholm.

Admission requirements

  • A completed secondary school certificate for bachelor's, a relevant bachelor's degree for master's, and usually a master's for a PhD
  • English-taught programs: IELTS, TOEFL or another test the university accepts; Swedish-taught programs: Swedish at upper-secondary level (TISUS or equivalent)
  • Official transcripts and certificates, with certified translations if they are not in English or Swedish
  • For master's and PhD: a CV, statement of purpose and academic references; PhD applicants usually also need a research proposal and an agreed supervisor
  • A valid passport and proof that you can pay tuition and living costs for the student visa

  • Choose your program and check its entry requirements, language of instruction and deadline on the university website
  • Apply through universityadmissions.se, Sweden's national application portal (non-EU applicants pay an application fee)
  • Upload transcripts, language scores, your passport and, for postgraduate programs, CV, statement of purpose and references
  • Pay the application fee if the university charges one, and apply before the program deadline
  • Non-EU students pay the first tuition instalment, then apply for a residence permit for studies from the Swedish Migration Agency
